Role of IT in Indian Economy


In simple words, IT ‘Information Technology’ connotes to the technology usage, be it a software or hardware, used for business solutions, data processing and day-to-day functioning of firms worldwide. In India and on a global scale, IT industries are booming and continuously growing with time. As per the expectations, the IT and BPO industry is positioned to grow in terms of industry revenue generation of up to USD 225 billion by 2020. In 2013-14 fiscal, the sector is expected to achieve a growth rate of approximate 18% as compared to last year about to touch 600 billion in revenues. Each and every industry depends on Information Technology including retail, banking, financial services, pharma, media, manufacturing, hospitality, telecom and more. Software and other technology solutions have become a vital part of all small, medium and large-sized companies, start-up firms, government bodies and public sector units. Newly emerging and evolving trends and technologies like mobile applications, cloud computing, big data, virtualization, social media, and data analytics and management is opening a new way to create more job and career opportunities in IT sector. According to strategic review at NASSCOM, there is going to be a rise in job opportunities for skilled and talented professionals in this fiscal.

IT is used in many verticals and domains and finds it usage for multiple purposes. For example, in BFSI (Banking & Financial Services Industry), IT finds its utility in installing ATM networks, computerizing branch networks, office automation, processing and handling mortgage loans, managing customer relationships, handling credit and debit cards functionality and last but not least enabling internet banking. In healthcare industry, IT has multiple roles to operate and function. Along with utilized and needed for processing raw data and information, conducting hospitality management, managing insurance and billing choices, coordinating inventory, it is also used in managing logistics and cataloguing records including patients’ history. In Airlines industry, IT provides several benefits like used in enhancing passenger services, keeping a well-defined track record of logistics and airline cargos, effective management of fuel including gas and oil logistics, coordinating for different flight operations and airport operations and much more. Due to such globalization and revolution, the entire world seems to have become like a small place. The successive growth is not only seen in the domain of mobile technology but also in communications, internet and WLL technologies. In a shell, with the introduction of privately held telecom organizations experiencing unprecedented boom and progress, telecom is expected to show sustained and stable growth in coming few years. The overlapping of simple communication and entertainment knowledge will make it even more rebound and restored. The demand for telecommunication industry is expected to grow and continue in the coming time for sure.

India has gained immense popularity and fame and even respect across the world due to its leading software and web development giants like Infosys, Cognizant, TCS, Wipro, IB Technology , a few are among the top notch companies. In addition, these companies outsource solutions all over the world and 80% of the job opportunities are offered by them especially in the telecommunication and software domains.
